THE IFI RULING IFI IN THE NEWS

Iowa IFI Program to End

The State of Iowa has decided to end the InnerChange Freedom Initiative program at the state’s Newton Correctional Facility. The contract between the State of Iowa and the InnerChange Freedom Initiative (IFI) ends June 2008. The contract allows for an earlier termination by the state if the number of participants in the In-prison program falls to less than 60 men. As a result of the state's decision last year to not allow any new participants to join the program, there will only be 12 men enrolled in the in-prison part of the program as of March 31, 2008. Therefore, Iowa has exercised its contractual right to discontinue the program two months early. IFI will continue to serve these inmates and those who have been released in to the community through our committed volunteers and staff.

Prison Fellowship President Mark Earley said, "Prison Fellowship and IFI are grateful for the Iowa Department of Corrections' commitment to the IFI program and our partnership in reducing recidivism in Iowa during the past eight years. We look forward to continuing to partner with them to reduce recidivism and promote public safety."

8th Circuit Overturns Much of Ruling Against IFI

The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals has reversed major portions of Judge Robert Pratt's ruling against the InnerChange Freedom Initiative. The Appeals Court ruled that IFI may continue as a privately funded program and that IFI and Prison Fellowship do not have to repay the state of Iowa $1.5 million as ordered by Judge Pratt.
